Scope and Contents
The Dayton Unit NAACP Records include brief summary histories of the organization, annual reports, programs from the annual Freedom Fund Banquet, and newspaper clippings. The majority of the materials date from 2002 to 2017.
Series I: History, consists of charter and founding documents (copies from scans of the original 1915 documents), a chronology of the organization, and a list of the organization’s presidents, including photographs. Materials in this series date from 2016. Some materials in this series are also available in electronic format (PDF).
Series II: Reports, consists of three types of reports: annual reports, president’s annual reports, and annual meeting reports. Materials in this series date from 2007 to 2017. Some materials in this series are also available in electronic format (PDF).
Subseries II-A: Annual Reports, cover the organization’s activities and initiatives for a particular year, in publication style format, often with numerous photographs. Materials in this subseries date from 2007 to 2017. All materials in this series are available in electronic format (PDF), and some (2007-2015) are available in print.
Subseries II-B: President’s Annual Reports, cover the business activities conducted by the organization’s president on behalf of the organization, in memorandum style format and typically without photos. Materials in this subseries date from 2007 to 2017 and are available only in electronic format (PDF).
Subseries II-C: Annual Meeting Reports, cover the topics addressed during the organization’s annual meeting, primarily reports from individual officers, as well as the election of officers. Materials in this subseries date from 2012 to 2017 and are available only in electronic format (PDF).
Series III: Freedom Fund Banquet Programs, consists of program books for the annual Freedom Fund Banquet, the primary source of fundraising for the organization. The lengthy program books include a variety of information, including messages of support from local officials, advertisements from sponsors, information about award recipients, lists of officers and lifetime members, reports of the year’s activities thus far, and youth council activities. Materials in this series are dated from 2002 to 2015, with the exception of 2003.
Series IV: Newspaper Articles, consists of news clippings relating, or of interest, to the organization. Most articles relate directly to the Dayton Unit NAACP, while others pertain to topics of interest to the organization but not directly connected with it, such as activities concerning local African Americans or the national NAACP. Of particular interest are articles pertaining to the 2008 presidential election of Barack Obama, the first African American President of the United States. The content in this series dates from 2003 to 2010. However, all physical materials in this series are preservation photocopies created in 2016, with the exception of 2 original full-page newspaper issues concerning the election of President Obama.
