Arrangement

This subseries is arranged using an alpha-numeric filing system unique to the Journal Herald newspaper. Alphanumeric codes have been assigned to correspond to topic categories (e.g., 37h for Restaurants, 80 for Sports, 81 for Education, etc.), which may have subcategory codes (e.g., 81g for K-12 Public Schools), and then alphabetic arrangements for files in the same subcategory (e.g., Steele High School, Stivers High School, etc.). In this series, the file was assigned an alphanumeric code based on the topic, and files were physically arranged alphanumerically based on the code.

These were searchable through a card file index, which has been converted to a database by Wright State. The database indicates the alpha-numeric code under which a topic search term may be found.

It is common to find photographs that were previously filed in the Black and White subseries or the Numeric subseries, that were (re)filed in this subseries by newspaper staff. (This is apparent from the refile titles on the backs of the photographs.)

Appraisal

In 2022-2023, the photographs portion of this subseries was weeded (reappraised) to remove photographs created by external news agencies, such as the Associated Press, United Press International, World Wide News, etc. Consequently, the photographs section was reduced by 65 linear feet. This reappraisal and weeding was completed by Lisa Rickey.

In Summer 20024, following reappraisal and discussion with Cox Media, all newspaper clippings previously included in the Alphanumeric subseries were discarded.

Processing Information

The Alphanumeric oversize photos in boxes OSBA were arranged and inventoried by Tyler Elam in Fall 2022.
