News Releases about Dr. White, 1964-1977
Scope and Content
The collection is organized into four series and five subseries based on Dr. Stanley C. White's career and personal life. The bulk of his collection is from his work as a NASA aerospace physician during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab programs, from1961 to 1971. Also included in the collection are personal photographs and memorabilia relating to his travels.
Series I, Personal Information, contains materials relating to Dr. White himself. Included in this section are personal files related to his career in the Air Force and work with NASA. This series contains correspondence from NASA and copies of his resumes.
Series II, Career Materials, contains papers, reports, and presentations written by Dr. White or others regarding the projects on which he worked for the Air Force and NASA. These projects include Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, X-15, X-20 (Dyna-Soar), the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, and Skylab. Photographs and papers on the psychological tests administered to potential astronauts. Diagrams and plans for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory are also present.
Series III, Publications, consists of papers, magazines, and books that Dr. White either collected during his lifetime that deal with science, medicine, and space travel, exploration, and aviation. Some of the materials mention him by name such as Who's Who in Aviation from 1973. This series is divided into two subseries.
Subseries IIIA, Magazines/Pamphlets, contains articles, magazines, and pamphlets that Dr. White collected on space exploration, aviation, and various aspects of space medicine. Many of the magazines in this subseries cover topics dealing with projects on which he worked. NASA pamphlets/booklets are contained within the series, as are popular magazines such Aeronautics and Aerospace Medicine.
Subseries IIIB, Books, consists of books Dr. White accrued during his career. The books vary in size and subject matter but most concern scientific topics relating to either space and/or medicine. Some of the books explicitly mention Dr. White while others were likely used as reference material. The Experiments of Biosatellite II is autographed by the editor. Space Medicine by Mae Mills Link directly mentions Dr. White, though he is not listed in the index. The 1970 edition of Who's Who in Aviation also features Dr. White.
Series IV, Audiovisual Material, consist of four subseries: IVA Photographs, IVB Transparencies, IVC Slides, and IVD Memorabilia. Audiovisual materials consist of photographs, transparencies, slides, and memorabilia. Many photographs are from NASA related to the Mercury, Apollo, and Gemini space programs.
Subseries IVA, Photographs, consist of personal and professional photographs of Dr. White from the Air Force. Also included in this section are photographs on the space programs Mercury and Apollo. Many of the Mercury photographs include training photographs and photographs of the astronauts.
Subseries IVB, Transparences, consist of transparencies used for presentations and professional development. Many transparencies relate to presentations and papers about aerospace medicine and NASA space program missions. Some of the transparencies correspond with slides in Subseries IVC.
Subseries IVC, Slides, consists of slides, both plastic and lantern, that either concern personal or professional matters. There are a good deal of slides that deal with his family life, including his children, holiday celebrations, and socials with family and colleagues. His travels/family vacations include locations such as Colonial Williamsburg, Niagara Falls, Europe, and photographs of rocket launches. Personal slides are annotated indicating the location and details about the slide. Some of the original slide list descriptions are located in Box 8, Folder 1. Some of the slides correspond with transparencies in Subseries IVB. Full lists of the slides/presentations are stored with the materials.
Subseries IVD, Memorabilia, consist of medals Dr. White received. Many medals are from Russia and relate to his time working on the Apollo/Soyuz Mission.
