Joseph Fiorini HIRSCH(1918 - 2015)

HIRSCH, Joseph Fiorini Age 97, of Dayton, Ohio passed peacefully on Sunday May 10, 2015 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born April 23, 1918 in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Joseph V. and Mary Louise (Fiorini) Hirsch. He served in the Navy during World War II. He received his architectural degree at Miami University of Ohio. A lifelong architect, he contributed to expansions of Miami Valley Hospital and designed the major buildings at the Cox Arboretum. Working with Paul Siple doing climatalogical research in the 1940s, he suggested a commonplace term that has become known worldwide: Windchill Factor. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Agnes Webb, his wife Phyllis (1949-1985) and his wife Florence (1990-2009). Survivors include his children Sherman Shonk (Phyllis), Sherry Vitz (Don), Holly Castor (David), Laurel Duvall (Pete), Merry Hirsch and Alan Hirsch (Susan); his grandchildren Brad Vitz, Lauren Taylor, Logan Parson, Meaghan Peters, Piper Nguyen, Marc Duvall, Mason Duvall, Trevor Bachman, Quinn Bachman, Ryan Hirsch and Sean Hirsch; and great grandchildren Lucie Parson, Ellis Parson, Grayson Peters, Sullivan Peters, Dane Duvall, Jace Duvall, Jack Duvall, Emma Duvall, Brady Bachman and Hunter Bachman. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Dayton Art Institute.
