Flymen and Inkmen Union of Dayton. Local 616

 Organization

Biography

The Flymen and Inkmen Union of Dayton, Local #616 was organized in May, 1963.

“Prior to its inception, its members were so called 'permit holders' in the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union, Local 54. Local 54 was then composed of all employees who were part of the crew manning the presses. In that Union, the permit holders had absolutely no official votes in union affairs, nor did they have the right to vote. They were not permitted to negotiate contracts, or to be delegates to meetings of the Joint Standing Committee. Because of this form of 'taxation without representation,' the Flymen and Inkmen formed a separate union with consent of all concerned. The Flymen and Inkmen entered into their first contract with the Employer [McCalls] on October 7, 1963.” (Source: MS 62, Box 1, File 7, Arbitration between Local #616 and McCall Corp.)

The Flymen and Inkmen later merged with the Dayton Printing and Pressman's Union, Local #54 in 1972.
