Hans Dam Aviation Collection

Abstract Hans Dam was a 50-year collector of aviation memorabilia, especially photographs and newspaper and magazine clippings. His primary areas of interest included air races and air shows, early flight, WACO aircraft, and the history of aviation in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. At the time of his death he was working on a book about aviation in southwestern Ohio which is included in the collection. Abstract Ivan R. Gates was an Early Bird of Aviation, receiving his pilot’s license in 1911, and is credited with starting the first flying school on the west coast in California. The collection documents Gates’ aviation business enterprises, including the Gates Flying Circus, Gates Flying Service, and the New York-based Gates Aircraft Corporation, which manufactured the Gates Belgian RSV convertible monoplane/biplane. Victor Rickard was an early pilot in Schenectady, New York, and manager of the city’s airport from 1927-1931. He was also involved in U.S. Naval aviation during World War I and Army Air Services during World War II. The collection contains a photographs, pilot’s licenses and identification cards, newspaper clippings, and video footage.
