Scope and Contents

The collection contains diplomas, articles, obituaries, lecture tickets, and licenses relating to the Messenger family and early medical history of the Miami Valley. The Messengers (Asa, Harold Sr., and Harold Jr.) practiced medicine in the Dayton-Xenia area since the 19th century. The collection also includes information relating to John Hole, M.D., said to be the first physician to come to the Dayton area in the late 1700s.

The collection contains diplomas, news articles and obituaries about Asa Isham, M.D., Asa C. Messenger, M.D., H.C. Messenger, Sr., M.D., H.C. Messenger, Jr., M.D., and John Hole, M.D.

Biographical / Historical

Asa Isham, M.D. was a pioneer physician in Jackson, Ohio. He was the maternal grandfather of Asa C. Messenger, M.D.

Asa Messenger, M.D. was born November 20, [1864?] in Jackson, Ohio. He graduated from Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati in 1884 and opened a practice in Xenia, Ohio, in 1903.

Harold C. Messenger, Sr., M.D. was born on January 10, 1891 in Carlton, Ohio. He attended Denison University in Granville. He received his medical degree from the Medical Chiurgical College of Philadelphia, now the Graduate School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania.

Harold C. Messenger, Jr., M.D. 1919- ? A Dayton orthopedic surgeon, retired, he received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine.

John Hole, M.D. was born in 1755 in New Jersey. He moved west following the American Revolution. He was the first physician in Dayton and died in 1813.
