Scope and Contents

The collection mainly consists of photographs and documents pertaining to Dr. Newell’s education at Otterbein College and Ohio State University Medical School.

Series I: Documents, spans 1930 to 1976, and includes Dr. Newell’s Ohio State University diploma, medical licenses, programs, and certificates.

Series II: Photographs, spans 1924 to 1970, and includes photos of Newell and classmates at Otterbein College and Ohio State University, as well as one photo of a sick pay in the South Pacific in 1945.

Biographical / Historical

Leonard Jackson Newell was born August 1, 1899, in Dayton, Ohio, to Thomas V. Newell and Martha (Harbaugh) Newell. He spent part of his childhood near Denver, Colorado, where his family moved in 1902 when his mother was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Newell returned to Ohio as a young man and graduated from Otterbein College in 1924. He earned his M.D. degree at Ohio State University in 1930. He served his medical residency at Kings County Hospital, in Brooklyn, New York, before returning to Dayton in 1934. He practiced general medicine in Dayton for over 40 years, with the exception of 1942 to 1946, during which time he served active duty in the U.S. Navy, as a flight surgeon and serving in the South Pacific and China. In the early 1940s, he had a medical practice at 854 N. Broadway in Dayton View neighborhood, while living at 903 Salem Avenue. He later moved his practice to a location on Catalpa Drive. Dr. Newell retired in 1980.

Dr. Newell married Henrietta Wahlenmaier on September 1, 1927, in Franklin County, Ohio. They had three surviving children: Joyce, Lenette, and Leonard Jr.

Dr. Newell died December 16, 1993, in Montgomery County, Ohio. He is buried in Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Abstract

Starting in 1934, Dr. Leonard J. Newell practiced general medicine in Dayton, Ohio, for more than 40 years. The collection mainly consists of photographs and documents pertaining to Dr. Newell’s education at Otterbein College and Ohio State University Medical School.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in two series:

  1. Series I: Documents, 1930-1976
  2. Series II: Photographs, 1924-1970

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated to the Fordham Health Sciences Library at Wright State University by Dr. Leonard J. Newell and his daughter Mrs. Joyce McMurtry, between 1985 and 1987. The collection was later transferred to Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University Libraries, when the Fordham Library was closed.

Separated Materials

Approximately 40 medical instruments (realia) received with the collection have been separated from the manuscript collection but are still owned by Wright State University Libraries. These materials can be identified and located by searching for L. J. Newell in the library catalog.

The majority of the manuscript materials originally received as part of the collection were deaccessioned in 2020. The deaccessioned materials included approximately 38 linear feet of confidential patient medical records, detailed financial documents, and tax records.

Two issues of the Good Samaritan Hospital “Profiles” newsletter were separated to SC-356.

  • Partial deaccession includes manuscript materials in accessions XX-74 and XX-78 consisting of confidential patient medical records, detailed financial documents, and tax records. The deaccession DOES NOT include: the medical instruments, furnishings, or other physical objects described in the deed of gift; the oversize materials in OS Drawer #69; 2 Good Samaritan Hospital newsletters (in Acc. XX-74, Box 33).
