Biographical / Historical

Joshua Martin was born in London County, Virginia, March 23, 1791. He graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1826. He moved to Xenia, Ohio, in 1813 and opened a successful practice. On June 4, 1818, he married Hester Whiteman, daughter of General Benjamin Whiteman. She died in 1834. He then remarried to Sara Poagu in 1835. She died in 1841, leaving him an infant daughter. Joshua Martin died in Louisville, Kentucky on November 30, 1857, and is buried in Xenia, Ohio. He is considered “one of the greatest physicians the county has ever had.”
