Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of three series containing ten folders.

Series I. Family, 1917-1939, consists of personal and family letters, photographs, cards and newspaper clippings. Included are clippings and photos related to C.T. Hutchins’ 20 year award from Goodyear in 1934. Clippings and letters related to his death in New York City in 1938 are also included.

Series II. Aviation, 1929-1934, contains clippings and photos related to the 1931 christening of the Akron airship, one of the largest helium-filled airships. Then-First Lady Lou Henry Hoover christened the ship. Also included is information on early aviation.

Series III. Celebrities, 1929-1938, includes letters, clippings and photos. Of special interest are photos and information about Amelia Earhart’s visit to Akron in 1929, and a letter to Hutchins from Eddie Rickenbacker.

Biographical / Historical

C.T. Hutchins was born in Auburn, N.Y. in 1889. He attended Conwell Academy and joined Goodyear in 1914 for what would become an over twenty year career with the company. He started in the branch operating department at Los Angeles, and then served as salesman, branch manager at Tacoma. He came to Akron, Ohio as manager of the Akron Dealer Development Department, and then was appointed assistant advertising manager before being promoted to advertising manager from 1928-1935. He left Goodyear in 1935 to join the executive staff of the J. Walter Thompson Company, a national advertising agency in New York City.

C.T. Hutchins had an interest in lighter than air aviation. During the summer of 1917, he enlisted in Paris, France with the American Field Service and was attached to the French Army. He was married to Geneva Hutchins and had one daughter, Lorabel. In 1938, C.T. Hutchins passed away at age 49 in New York City after being hit by a taxicab.

Abstract

C.T. Hutchins was an advertising executive with the Goodyear Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio, who had an interest in lighter than-air-aviation. His papers include personal and family letters, photographs, cards, news clippings, and memorabilia pertaining to early aviation. Of particular interest is material on the Goodyear-Zeppelin christening in Akron in 1931, and a folder pertaining to Amelia Earhart's visit to Akron in 1929.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was purchased by the Wright State University Archives in March of 1985 from a dealer in Valley Stream, New York.

Separated Materials

Two wedding party photographs were separated to oversize storage.
