Historical Note

In 1926, the Aeronautics Branch was created in the Department of Commerce in response to the growth of civil aviation in the United States. In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA) was created "... to promote the development and safety and to provide for the regulation of civil aeronautics."

One of the most important responsibilities of the CAA is to promote safety in the air. This is done by providing pilot training, creating safety regulations, and requiring certification of aircraft, as well as pilots. Civil aviation accidents are investigated by the CAA as well.

Another responsibility of the CAA is the Federal Airways System. This system consists of a network of civil airways, airports, and navigational aids. Within the Federal Airways Service, new devices are developed to ensure the safety of civil aviation. During World War II, the CM assisted the Armed Services in constructing airports, radio ranges, and other aids in the United States and abroad.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration is the policeman of the sky. They help to ensure that civil aviation is safe and enjoyable for all.
