Biographical / Historical

George “JR” Wedekind, Jr. was born in Hamilton, Ohio, in 1923. His family moved to Middletown, Ohio in 1925, where his father, George “Pappy” Wedekind, Sr. opened Middletown Municipal Airport, which later became Hook Field in 1949.

JR followed his father’s aeronautical path, taking his first solo flight at age 17, in an Aeronca Chief airplane. After graduating from Middletown High School in 1942, Wedekind enrolled at Miami University in Oxford and joined the Army Air Corps Reserve. He earned his commercial pilot certification in 1943 and was assigned to teach primary and intermediate Naval cadets at Miami University’s flight school. The flight school ended in 1944, and JR entered active duty in the Army Air Corps as a flight engineer and mechanic. He was honorably discharged in June 1946, and resumed life in Middletown with his wife, Wilma.

Over the next 48 years, George Wedekind logged more than 17,000 flying hours. He worked as a charter pilot, corporation pilot and air show pilot. He also owned his own business, Wedekind Aircraft, Inc, and was a popular flight instructor.

In 1974, he volunteered to help transform the Dayton Air Fair into a major event. After selling his business in 1986, Wedekind worked full-time with the air fair. In 1994, he retired as director of the U.S. Air and Trade Show (now the Vectren Dayton Air Show).

George Wedekind was also highly involved the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park. He was an incorporating trustee of Aviation Trail, Inc, a non-profit organization formed in 1981 that sought to identify and preserve Dayton and the Miami Valley’s aviation heritage. He also severed as an election committee member for the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

Wedekind was affiliated with many other local and national aviation organizations, including the Air Force Association, American Aviation Historical Society, Experimental Aircraft Association, Quiet Birdman, and the Silver Wings Fraternity.

George Wedekind passed away on July 25, 2003, at his home in Fairborn, Ohio.
