Scope and Contents
The records of I.U.E. Local 689 are divided into three series: Minutes; Contracts; and Hewitt Soap Company Manuals.
Series I contains the minutes of meetings between the Hewitt Soap Company Employees' Independent Union and the Hewitt Soap Company. The span dates for these minutes are February 1942 until February 1944. The minutes deal with contract negotiations and with employee management disputes over such issues as pay raises, job classifications, and vacations.
Series II contains contracts between the Independent Union and the Hewitt Soap Company for 1964 and 1973, and a contract between I.U.E. Local 689 and the Hewitt Soap Company for 1976.
Series III contains two manuals of the Hewitt Soap Company; a General Safety Practice booklet and an Employee Information booklet, both dated 1973.

Historical Note
Until August 1975, the employees of the Dewitt Soap Company were represented by the Employees' Independent Union. Although at first contested by the company, this union's assimilation into the I.U.E. Local 689 became official when the first elections were held in January 1976.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The records were donated by Local 689 and accessioned into the Wright State University Archives and Special Collections in June of 1980 as part of the Ohio Labor History Project, accession number 80-9.
