Content Description

The materials within the Dayton Printing and Pressman's Union, Local #54 are divided into three series, Union Minutes, Union Affairs, and the Board of Director's Reports. The arrangement is chronological within the various folders.

Series I: Minutes contains a meeting to meeting record of the Union's interests, concerns, and activities. The bulk of this material (1890 1957) is found in bound volumes with remainder in two folders (1958 1964).

Series II: Union Affairs deals with Union elections, information pertinent to Union members, and meetings. The span dates for this material range from 1965 to 1969.

Series III: Board of Directors includes primarily monthly reports. Usually, three Union members were elected to the Board of Director's Committee and served as an advisory body to the chief Union officers. The Board of Director's Monthly reports date from 1945 to 1967.

Biographical / Historical

The Dayton Printing and Pressman's Union, Local #54 was organized March 29, 1890, and chartered by the International Printing and Pressman's Union of North America. Members of Local #54 worked in the McCall's plant located at 2219 McCall Street, Dayton, Ohio, later known as the Dayton Press, Inc. Local #54 later merged with the Flymen and Inkmen Union of Dayton, Local #616 in 1972 to form an expanded Local #54.

Abstract

The collection consists of a fairly complete run of meeting minutes for the years 1890-1964 as well as Board of Director's reports and election materials for this Dayton union.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records of the Dayton Printing and Pressman's Union, Local #54, were accessioned into the Wright State University Special Collections & Archives in September of 1978, as part of the Ohio Labor History Project. They were donated by William Clark, secretary/treasurer.
