Scope and Content

This collection consists of personal correspondence, publications and photographs related to Richard Hoener's work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The collection also contains publications related to aviation and memorabilia that he collected over the years.

Series I, Personal, contains information related to Richard Hoener's life and career in the military. This includes military orders he received and covers a ten year span of his military career. Flight performance data relating to various aircraft, as well as letters of appreciation and commendations that he received over his career, are included in this series. There are also reports that were internally generated for use by the United States Air Force. The series is organized into 6 categories: Career, Work Related Information, Reports/Memos, Flight Records/Log Books, Directories, and Other.

Series II, Publications, contains publications that Richard Hoener collected over the years, most of which are aviation related. This includes magazines as well as newsletters. The series is organized into 7 categories: Technical Reports, Manuals, Newsletters/Bulletins, Books, Articles, Magazines, and Other, This series includes a few publications that are in French and German. Legal Size material is located in Box 12.

Series III, Audio/Visual, consists primarily of photographs that include military as well as civilian aircraft. The aircraft files are labeled by manufacturer while the photos themselves are identified with model number, as well as type of engine; the oversized photos of airplanes are only identified by model. The majority of personal photos are not identified. There is a subseries of negatives/slides containing photos mostly personal in nature. The third subseries contains VHS videos that are aviation related, and oversized aviation maps.

Series IV, Memorabilia, consists of several trophies, slide rulers, a special edition magazine related to the moon landing, and other commemorative materials.

Biography of Richard Hoener

Richard Hoener was born on April 18, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York. Hoener attended the University of Alabama and received a BS in Aeronautical Engineering in 1939. According to Capstone Engineer Magazine, a publication of the University of Alabama, "During World War II, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army as a test pilot flying B-17s and other aircraft as they came off the assembly line to certify their airworthiness. Following the war, he served in civilian capacity as the head of the static testing laboratory at Wright-Patterson Field until 1974. He then moved to Long Island, N. Y. , and worked with Fairchild Republic as the chief design engineer for the A-10 Attack Jet. He retired from Fairchild Republic, and returned to Kettering, Ohio." Mr. Hoener was a member of the Huffman Prairie Aviation History Society and volunteered in the Special Collections and Archives Department at Wright State University. He died on May 19, 2007.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated to Wright State University Libraries' Special Collections and Archives in June 2007 by the children of Richard Hoener.

  • VHS tapes #335 (The American Air Museum Britain Story), #336 (The Flying Machines), and #337 (Dreams of Flight to the Moon and Beyond), which were previously stored in the SCA Media Collection. Deaccession completed by Toni Vanden Bos
  • 3.5" floppy disk containing AirLab 1994 Directory of names, personal addresses, and telephones
  • Removed publications that duplicated what is in the reading room. Boxes 8-11 were adjusted, extent reduced by 7".
