Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of 53 photographs and additional printed material. The collection contains many period copies of wire services and magazine photographs and other printed materials. It is arranged into two series.

Series I, Printed Materials, is organized in chronological order. These printed materials give additional information as to the formation of the collection and to some individual photographs. Included is a signed Aerial Age Weekly magazine article signed by Alberto Santos-Dumont.

Series II, Photographs, contains fifty-three photographs spanning 1903 to 1941. The majority of photographs are dated and have some identifying material attached. The photographs cover a wide array of aviation topics, including aircraft, dirigibles, and kites. Many early aviators are also included in this collection: Patrick N. L. Bellinger, Oskar Bider, Glenn Hammond Curtiss, Rene Fonck, Benjamin Delahauf Foulois, Fiorello Henry LaGuardia, Alfred Leblanc, Charles A. Lindbergh, Hiram S. Maxim, Louis Paulhan, Alberto Santos-Dumont, Adolf Warchalowski, and Wilbur Wright. Some of these photographs contain signatures of those depicted. In the first sleeve of Box 2 is a brief note of information on each photo.

History of the William Peters Aviation Photograph Collection

This collection was created by William H. Peters, a collector of signatures. The photographs were given to Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn Jr. as a gift in hopes of an exchange for his signature.

Abstract

The collection compiled by William H. Peters and given to Lieutenant Colonel John Glenn includes 53 photographs of famous aviators and aircrafts from the beginning of man-powered flight through the late 1930s. Included are images of the 1903 Wright Flyer, Glenn Curtiss, Benjamin Foulois, Fiorello Henry LaGuardia and many others. This collection also contains many signed photographs and documents including signatures from Wilbur Wright, Alberto Santos-Dumont, Dr. Hugo Eckner, Edwin Levick and M. Salmond.
