History of Delphinium Garden Club of Dayton

The Delphinium Garden Club of Dayton is an African American organization formed in March of 1931 by Remitha Ford, a social worker at the Linden Center who addresses a group of ladies in the neighborhood of Iola Street. Mrs. E.H. Talbot and Mrs. Frederick Rike also helped the formation of the organization, whose mission is to beautify surrounding land and participate in community projects that pertain to garden clubs and horticulture of the area. In 1968, the club was sponsored for membership in the Garden Club Federation of Dayton and Vicinity and the Ohio Association of Garden Club, making it the only organization in the area with membership in both. The club hosts and participates in flower shows, makes trips to garden nurseries (local and statewide) and participates in civic beautification projects. Members must have garden or house plants and exhibit a display in at least one flower show during the year. It is also policy that members try to have on or more delphiniums in their garden.
