Scope and Content

The collection consists of eighty-nine photographs taken by Jane Reece, covering approximately twenty-five years from 1912 to 1937. The collection contains portraits and dance compositions of Josephine and Hermene Schwarz, portraits of the Schwarz family and others. It also contains two self-portraits, various birds, flowers, and still lifes. Numerous photographs are signed.

The collection contains portraits and dance compositions of Josephine and Hermene Schwarz, portraits of the Schwarz family and others. It also contains two self-portraits, various birds, flowers, and still lifes. Numerous photographs are signed. Series I Miss Hermene Schwarz, contains eighteen photographs of Miss Hermene Schwarz. Included in Box 1 is a file folder containing contact sheets of the photographs in this collection and also several extra copies of a few of the photographs. Series II Miss Josephine Schwarz, contains twenty-four photographs of Miss Josephine Schwarz. Series III Miss Josephine and Miss Hermene Together contains ten photographs of Miss Josephine and Miss Hermene together. Series IV Family, contains twenty-one photographs of the Schwarz family. Series V Miscellaneous Portraits, contains four portraits with non-family members, including Paul Katz, Matilda Dunbar, Dorothy Bruck, and Jane Reece herself. Series VI Nature and Travel Scenes and four handwritten notes by Jane Reece, contains thirteen nature and travel scenes and four handwritten notes by Jane Reece.

Biography of Josephine Schwarz and Jane Reece

Miss Josephine Schwarz and her sister, Hermene, founded the Dayton Ballet. The photographs were taken by Jane Reece, internationally known Dayton photographer, an associate of Stieglitz and Steichen, and one of the first professional female photographers in the United States. Jane Reece lived from 1868 to 1961.
