American Society of Aviation Artists Collection
Scope and Content
The American Society of Aviation Artists Records document the art of leading aviation artists in this country and around the world. The accompanying records provide insight into the process and subjects of aviation art.
Series I: Artists
The ASAA records include individual biographical files on many aviation artists. Many files contain correspondence, subject research materials, photographs and slides of artists and their works, as well as sketches and preliminary drawings. Many of the photographs correspond to prints in Series III. The artist files are arranged alphabetically by last name.
Series II: Organizational Material
These records include ASAA event programs, logos, pamphlets, contest results and other similar items.
Series III: Art Prints
These prints represent the work of many aviation artists. An Access database at the reference desk shows what work is on loan in the Special Collections and Archives. The prints are located in oversized storage

Copyright restrictions apply. Unpublished manuscripts are protected by copyright. Permission to publish, quote or reproduce must be secured from the repository and the copyright holder. All artists represented in this collection retain the copyright to their works. Permission from the artist must be obtained before any artwork or its likeness is reproduced.
History of American Society of Aviation Artists
The American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA) was founded in 1986 by five famous aviation artists: Keith Ferris, Jo Kotula, Bob McCall, R.G. Smith and Ren Wicks. The goal of the society is to promote professionalism, authenticity and quality in aviation art. The group also provides a social and learning environment for its members. Members include artists from the United States and around the world as well as art enthusiasts, students, and art-related institutions.
The society provides assistance to its members through student scholarships, educational forums, business advice, and exhibition opportunities. ASAA also publishes AeroBrush magazine for its members.

Abstract
The American Society of Aviation Artists collection consists of nearly 300 separate pieces of aviation art, including posters, paintings, drawings, photographs and aviation magazine covers.The ASAA collection also includes articles, sketches, newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, negatives and slides. Most of the material is about individual artists. A few materials are about ASAA events.

Acquisition Information
The American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA) Records were given to Wright State University Special Collections and Archives by Ann Cooper, aviation author and editor of AeroBrush Magazine, the official publication of ASAA. The collection was deposited in two installments. In 1997, Mrs. Cooper's collection of aviation art prints was donated. These are on loan from ASAA and all copyrights are retained by the original artists. In November 2005, Ann Cooper donated her biographical files on many aviation artists. Some American Society of Aviation Artists records were also donated.
