A Legend Rare of Frigidaire

 Collection
Identifier: SC-271

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a small advertisement pamphlet for Frigidaire. “A Legend Rare of Frigidaire” is a parody of Aladdin, in which he receives a refrigerator from a genie. However, the color drawings accompanying the poem portray a Chinese or generic ‘Oriental’ setting. The pamphlet was written in 1926 by Edith Lindeman Calisch for the Delco-Light company, owners of Frigidaire.

Biographical / Historical

At the time of the book’s publication in 1926, Frigidaire cold chests were manufactured by Delco-Light Company, a subsidiary of the General Motors Corporation. Frigidaire described itself as the “world’s largest builders of electric refrigerating equipment.”

Edith Lindeman Calisch was a writer whose father and husband both worked for a North Carolina business that distributed Frigidaire products in the 1920s. Born in Pennsylvania in 1898, she lived with her family in Dayton from 1908 to 1913, when the 1913 Flood prompted her father to move the family to Virginia.
