Scope and Contents

This booklet, Proceedings of the Ohio Medical Convention, contains details on the proceedings of a state medical conference held in Columbus, Ohio, in May 1846. It begins with meeting minutes and a roster of physicians who attended the conference (including their home county and town). The majority of the booklet consists of the papers presented by physicians present, detailing case reports and medical procedures. Papers in the booklet were written by John Butterfield (concerning typhoid fever); L. M. Lawson, Robert Thompson, R. Hills, and R. L. Howard. Additionally, it contains a section discussing medical ethics. The Proceedings booklet was printed by R. N. and W. F. Comly, printers. The Comly brothers Richard and William are better known in Dayton's history as the publishers of the Dayton Journal for many years.

Biographical / Historical

The Ohio Medical Convention held an annual meeting each year from 1835 to 1851. Sessions of the Medical Convention of Ohio and the Ohi oState Medical Society were held concurrently from 1846 to 1851, after which the Medical Convention of Ohio merged with the Ohio State Medical Society. Richard N. and William F. Comly, the printers of this booklet, were also the publishers of the newspaper Daily Dayton Journal from 1847 into the 1850s. John Butterfield was a professor at Willoughby Medical College. L. M. Lawson was a professor at Transylvania University. R. L. Howard was a lecturer at the Medical and Surgical Institute of Columbus. Robert Thompson was the Surgeon General of Ohio.

The booklet has water damage, and its front cover is mostly detached.

Custodial History

It is unclear how or when this item came to be in the possession of Wright State University Special Collections and Archives. However, it appears that at some point it was part of the Dayton Metro Library's collection, as it is emboss-stamped with "Dayton Public Library" on its title page and ink-stamped "Main" on the first page of proceedings. The first page also includes an ink stamp "Midland Rare Book Co. Jul. 24 '53." Midland Rare Book Company is located in Mansfield, Ohio.
