Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Garvey’s pilot’s log book, handbook and information about Garvey’s Piper Cherokee 140 aircraft, an aviation drawing by Garvey, handwritten notes, as well as business cards and publications.

Biographical / Historical

John E. Garvey was born November 12, 1931, in Minnesota, to Luella Vandewater and Norman Garvey. He attended Breck Military Academy, West Point Preparatory School, and was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He went to Los Angeles Art School, UCLA Opera Workshop, and was tenor soloist for San Gabriel Episcopal Church for 2 years. John did a “Big Bear” comic strip for 3 years for Hi-Country Life newspaper. He worked in Technical, Commercial, and Fine Art all his life for mostly aerospace companies and retired from McDonnell Douglas in California. He was a member of the EAA and loved and lived for “flying” since he was 6 years old. John died on July 9, 2004, at his home in Miamisburg, Ohio, and was survived by his wife Joann (Stevens) Garvey. The collection was donated to Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University Libraries, by John’s wife Mrs. Joanne Garvey, in April 2005.

Existence and Location of Copies

Copies of all flight logs in this collection were provided to Mrs. Joanne Garvey in May 2005.
