Biographical / Historical

Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1872. He self-published his first book of poems, Oak and Ivy in 1893. He published several poetry books, novels, and short stories through conventional publishers, and he contributed song lyrics as well. He became was one of the first African American poets to gain national recognition. His health deteriorated in 1898, and he died in 1906 in Dayton, Ohio, from tuberculosis.

Of Grace A. Hammon, little is known, but she seems to have lived in Pennsylvania.
