Scope and Contents

This collection includes various Oakwood High School publications, including the high school’s student produced newspaper the Oak Leaf (1927-1936); programs from the dramatic arts class productions (1930-1938); the Oakwood handbook and directory of students (1928-1936); annual commencement programs (1933, 1935, and 1936); and a curriculum booklet with student directory (circa 1924). One publication not specific to Oakwood High School has been retained with the collection, as it was received with Harsh’s other materials: Minimum Essentials in Manners and Right Conduct for High School Students (1921) by William E. McVey.

Biographical / Historical

Oakwood High School is a public high school located at 1200 Far Hills Ave. Oakwood, Ohio. The high school was organized in 1922, and the first graduating class was in 1924. The items in this collection belonged to Carl C. Harsh, a teacher of English, German, and drama, at Oakwood High School in the 1920s and 1930s.

Carl Carlisle Harsh was born on April 7, 1894, in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Ohio State University. In 1917, he was living and teaching in Hocking County, Ohio. In the 1920 census, he was a teacher in Angola, Indiana. By 1927, Harsh taught at Oakwood High School, where he taught English, German, and Drama. He was advisor/editor of the Oak Leaf and teacher/director of drama programs. Carl Harsh’s son, Robert Harsh, also attended Oakwood High School, graduating in the class of 1933. Based on materials in the collection, Harsh taught at Oakwood until at least the spring of 1938. By the 1940 census, Carl and his wife Claudia had returned to Logan, Ohio, and Harsh’s occupation is listed as bookkeeper. Carl C. Harsh died on December 24, 1982, in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

Custodial History

The materials appear to have been collected by Carl C. Harsh. Several items are marked “C.C.H.,” and the original accession included an envelope addressed to “Mr. Carl C. Harsh, 309 Hadley Avenue, Dayton, Ohio.” Carl Harsh’s son, Robert Harsh, was a member of the Oakwood class of 1933, a commencement program for which is included. Furthermore, the collection seems most focused on subjects related to those taught by Carl Harsh: English and drama.
