Scope and Contents
The records of Amalgamated Transit Union, Local #1456 are divided into five series. The series are: Constitution and General Laws, Minutes, Financial Records, Correspondence, and Negotiations. The Minutes series is divided into four subseries: Committee Minutes, Executive Board Minutes, Membership Minutes, and Membership Roll Call. The Negotiations series is divided into four subseries: Agreements, Demands and Proposals, Individual Members' Proposals, and National Labor Relations Board.
Note that the Correspondence series has no records for the years 1955, 1967, 1968 and 1969; the records were received from the Local with those years missing.
The Correspondence series contains several items of note. The 1971 file has a copy of a letter (January 29) from Governor Jimmy Carter explaining his position on the Right to Work Laws. The 1976 file has a campaign letter and photograph (May 21) from Senator Howard Metzenbaum. The researcher will find a letter from Senator John Glenn (July 7) concerning proposed minimum wage legislation in the 1977 file. The 1978 file includes a report on the J.P. Stevens Company (August 18) written by actress Jane Fonda after she inspected the plant incognito. The last letter of the undated Correspondence file is a letter from State Representative C.J. McLin, Jr. in reference to his district (35th) being reapportioned.
