Scope and Contents

The Harry S. Truman VIP File includes black and white photographs from several visits by President Truman, First Lady Bess Truman, and their daughter Margaret Truman to Dayton, as well as elsewhere in Ohio and Indiana.

There are visits to Dayton, Columbus, Sidney, Wooster, and Bellefontaine, Ohio, as well as Indianapolis and Richmond, Indiana.

Notable individuals photographed with President Truman include: Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam; Carl Lehman, Democratic leader in Sidney; Fred Speice and Roy Neth, Dayton City Commissioners; Frank J. Lausche, later Ohio governor; James M. Cox; Edward G. Breen, Dayton mayor and later Congressman; Louis Lohrey, Dayton mayor; Albert Horstman, Democratic National Committeeman from Dayton; Marguerite Parrish, a local Democratic Party leader in Dayton; and Michael V. DiSalle, Ohio senatorial candidate and later Ohio governor.

The most voluminous file is for a visit that President Truman made to Dayton in October 1948, with wife Bess and daughter Margaret, including several shots of a parade in an open car alongside James Cox and Edward Breen, as well as a speaking engagement at Memorial Hall.
