Bernard L. “Bernie” Whelan in full flight gear, standing near the tail of DH-4 aircraft number A-30830, at Moraine. Bernie Whelan learned to fly in 1913 at the Wright School of Aviation and was a test pilot for Dayton-Wright Airplane Company. Original caption reads: “Bernie Whelan –test pilot at Moraine City, Ohio.” Circa 1917-1919.
