Arrangement

Files in the (Dayton Daily News) Black and White Photographs subseries are physically subdivided by size, with the majority being stored in 9" x 12" files in record center boxes (box prefix code BW); and oversize files being stored in 13" x 16" flat boxes (OSBD) or oversize drawers (OSD). Only the OSBD (oversize boxes) have a complete listing available in the online finding aid.

Within each size subdivision, files are stored in alphabetical order by subject name, often with a hierarchy system of headings and subheadings. For example: "Airplanes - U.S. - B-52" ; "Streets - Third Street" ; or "Schools - Stivers".

Appraisal

In 2023-2024, this subseries was weeded (reappraised) to remove photographs created by external news agencies, such as the Associated Press, United Press International, World Wide News, etc. Consequently, its size was reduced from 79 linear feet to 40 linear feet (31 record center boxes, 19 oversize boxes, and 3 oversize drawers). This reappraisal and weeding was completed by Lisa Rickey.
