History of Women, Inc.

Women, Inc. of Yellow Springs was organized in the fall of 1974 as a "non-profit, nonaffiliated private women's club." A few months later, the group rented a space in downtown Yellow Springs and maintained regular hours for women to meet and socialize. In June of 1975, Women, Inc. members decided to become more politically active and reorganized as a "study and action group for issues of concern to women." Shortly after this shift focus, the group closed its rented space and began to meet regularly in members homes.

Women, Inc. activities are guided and coordinated by a rotating Steering Committee. Over the years, the organization has evolved into an ad hoc catalyst for action on women's issues as well as a support group for its members. Such Greene County groups as NARAL, the Feminist Health Fund, the Dead Bolt Gang, and Women's Job Development Services (WJDS) have all been generated out of Women, Inc. efforts.
